A luglio 2011 il brano è stato certificato disco multi-platino dalla Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana. La versione dal vivo di Set Fire to the Rain ha vinto nel febbraio 2013 il Grammy Award come miglior interpretazione pop solista. Ha come tematica la fine di una relazione d'amore, con particolare riferimento alla precedente storia della stessa Adele. Più nel dettaglio, il brano ha un tono di accusa nei confronti dell'ex compagno, colpevole di aver mentito, tenendo nascosto un lato del proprio carattere. E’ stato definito da John Murphy di MusicOMH come una power ballad.
